Crack the egg game for Shopify
A golden egg sits in its nest on your store. The shopper taps it, watches the cracks spread, and on the last tap it breaks open to reveal their prize: a real single-use Shopify discount code.
Tap "Crack the real egg" to play. The prizes in the demo are examples; you set your own.
Why a golden egg popup holds attention
Crack the egg builds anticipation in the simplest way possible: one tap is never enough. Each tap adds a crack and the game counts down the taps that are left, so the shopper is invested before the prize appears. By the time the shell gives way, they really want to know what is inside.
A golden egg also says "treasure" without a word of copy. It feels a little luxurious, which makes it a good fit for stores that want a playful popup without anything that looks like a casino.
What the shopper experiences
- The egg appears. Your headline, a line of text and a golden egg resting in a nest.
- Tap, tap, tap. Each tap cracks the shell a little more, and a line under the egg says how many taps are left.
- The egg breaks open. On the final tap the shell splits and the prize is revealed.
- The prize is a real code. Winners see a single-use code with a countdown and can copy it with a click.
- Shop with it. One click on "Shop with my prize" applies the code to their cart, and a reminder bubble brings them back before it expires.
Prize setups for a golden egg
The build-up of a crack the egg game raises expectations a little, so the prize list should feel worth the taps.
- Few empty eggs. The "Break the egg" template gives "try again" only a small chance, and most stores will want to keep it that way.
- A steady ladder. A spread such as 5%, 10%, 15% and an occasional 20% off, with the bigger prizes given the lower chances.
- A seasonal golden egg. Around Easter or a spring launch, put a special code of your own in the egg: make it in Shopify and add it as "My own discount code".

When to use crack the egg
The egg is at its best on phones, where tapping is second nature, and as a welcome game for first-time visitors on the home page. It also makes a good seasonal swap: run your usual game most of the year and bring out the golden egg for Easter or a spring collection.
If you would rather shoppers choose than tap, the mystery gift box is its closest cousin, and the fishing game is another calm option with a single tap. For the bigger picture on offers, see our discount popup page.

No second egg
A returning winner gets their earlier code back rather than a new egg to crack.
Set up a crack the egg game
- Install Winky and switch it on. Winky shows you the one switch to turn on in your theme editor. Your theme's code stays as it is.
- Create a campaign from the "Break the egg" template. Write your headline and the line of text that tells shoppers to tap the egg.
- Fill the egg. In the Game tab, add your prizes, choose how likely each one is, and set a minimum order and how long codes last.
- Choose when it shows. In Show it, pick the timing, pages, devices, who sees it and how often.
- Publish. The egg goes live on your store, and Analytics shows the views, plays, clicks, orders and sales it brings in.
Crack the egg questions
More answers on the main FAQ.
How many taps does it take to crack the egg?
A few. Each tap adds a crack, and the game tells the shopper how many taps are left before the egg breaks open.
Is the crack the egg game only for Easter?
No. A golden egg works all year as a welcome or exit offer. Easter and spring launches are simply a natural moment to use it.
Can the egg be empty?
Yes, if you want. Add a "Nothing (try again)" prize and give it a chance. Most stores keep that chance small so the taps usually pay off.
Are the codes inside the egg real?
Yes. For a percentage or amount prize, Winky creates a single-use Shopify discount code for each winner, with an optional minimum order. Codes last 15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days.
