A popup built to increase Shopify sales
Most popups are built to grow a mailing list. Winky is built to sell. Shoppers play a quick prize game, win a real single-use discount code, and one click puts it in their cart. No email or phone wall stands between them and checkout.
Play, win a real code, shop with it before the countdown ends. Tap "Play the real wheel" to try it.
A popup whose job is the order
Most popup apps for Shopify are sold on one promise: grow your email and SMS list. That's a reasonable goal, but it means the popup asks for something before it gives anything, and the sale it's hoping for happens later, somewhere else, if it happens at all.
Winky starts from the other end. Its job is done when the shopper checks out. There's no form to fill in, so the only thing between a visitor and the sale is a single tap to play. Success isn't counted in sign-ups; it's counted in orders and sales, read straight from your Shopify orders.
That doesn't make email marketing wrong. For some stores a list is the right investment, and Winky works happily next to whatever email tool you already use. We compare the two approaches honestly in revenue popups vs email popups.
How a prize game turns a visit into an order
- The shopper plays. One of seven games: a spin to win wheel, scratch card, gift box, egg, slot machine, balloon or fishing game. It takes a tap or a click. See them all on the games page.
- They win a real code. For percentage and amount prizes, Winky creates a single-use Shopify discount code just for that winner. You can also hand out your own code, such as a free shipping code you made in Shopify.
- A countdown starts. Codes last 15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days, and the winner sees the time ticking. A prize that expires is a reason to shop now, not someday.
- One click to the cart. "Shop with my prize" applies the code to the cart, so the shopper never has to copy or type it.
- A gentle reminder. If they keep browsing, a small reminder bubble brings them back to their prize before it expires.
A returning winner gets their earlier code back instead of playing again, so nobody can keep replaying for a bigger prize.
Levers that protect your margin
Prizes and chances
A % discount, an amount off, your own code or "try again". Chances always add up to 100%.
Minimum order
Attach a minimum order to a prize so it only applies to baskets worth discounting.
Single-use codes
Each winner gets their own code that works once, so it can't be posted and reused.
Code life
15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days. Shorter codes ask for a quicker decision.
When and where
Pick timing, pages, devices and who sees it, from everyone to shoppers from ads and links.
Orders, not guesses
Views, plays, clicks, orders and sales for each campaign, read live from Shopify orders.
What to measure
Winky's Analytics shows views, plays, clicks, orders and sales for every campaign. An order counts when the shopper used the popup's button, a Winky prize code or a Winky link. Read the numbers as a chain, and fix the weakest link first:
- Views to plays. If plenty of shoppers see the popup but few play, it may be showing too early or on the wrong pages. Our timing and frequency guide covers the options.
- Plays to clicks. If shoppers play but don't click "Shop with my prize", the prizes may not feel worth it.
- Clicks to orders. If they click but don't buy, look at the minimum order and how long the code lasts.
Keep your eye on orders and sales, not plays. A game that's fun but doesn't sell isn't doing its job. Change one setting at a time, so you can tell which change made the difference.
A setup recipe to start with
- Install Winky and switch on the app embed. Winky shows you the one switch in your theme editor. No theme code changes.
- Create a campaign from the "Spin to win" template. Write a short headline that says what's at stake.
- Set modest prizes. A couple of smaller discounts, one bigger prize with a low chance, and a "try again" slice. Our prize ideas guide has mixes to copy.
- Add a minimum order and a 1 hour code life. Long enough to finish shopping, short enough to decide today.
- Show it after 10 seconds on product and collection pages, on all devices, once per visit (up to 3 times a week).
- Publish, then watch orders and sales. Give it time before you change anything.
You pay only when it earns
Winky is free until your popups bring in $500 of sales in 30 days. Above that it's 2% of popup sales over $500, capped at $49 every 30 days, billed by Shopify. The details are on the pricing page.
Sales popup questions
More answers on the main FAQ.
Does Winky ask shoppers for their email?
No. There's no email or phone field anywhere in a Winky popup. Shoppers play, win a code and shop. If you want a mailing list, keep using your email tool's own signup forms alongside Winky.
How does Winky know a sale came from the popup?
An order counts when the shopper used the popup's button, a Winky prize code or a Winky link. Winky reads these orders live from your Shopify store and shows orders and sales for each campaign.
Won't the discounts eat my margin?
You decide the prizes, how likely each one is, an optional minimum order and how long codes last. Every winning code is single-use, so it can't be shared around.
Which game should I start with?
The spin to win wheel is a familiar place to start. Every game uses the same prize rules, so you can switch games later and compare orders in Analytics.
