Guides for Shopify popups and prize games

Practical, honest guides to running popups and prize games on a Shopify store: how to set them up, what to offer, and when to show them.

Where to start

New to prize games? Read how to add a spin to win wheel first. It covers every setting once, in order. Then use the prize ideas guide to pick prizes you can afford, and the timing guide to decide when shoppers see them.

Want to see the games before reading? All seven are playable on the games page, from the spin to win wheel to the fishing game. Each one hands out a real, single-use Shopify discount code on your store.

The basics every guide builds on

These guides use Winky, a Shopify app that shows popups and prize games on your store. A few things hold true throughout, so it helps to know them up front:

  • Prizes are real Shopify codes. For a % or amount prize, Winky creates a single-use code for each winner, with an optional minimum order. Codes last 15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days.
  • Claiming takes one click. The winner sees the code with a countdown, and "Shop with my prize" applies it to the cart. A small reminder bubble brings them back before it expires.
  • Every prize has a chance. The chances always add up to 100%, and a returning winner gets their earlier code back instead of playing again.
  • No theme code. Winky is an app embed you switch on in the theme editor with one click.
  • No names or emails. Winky doesn't collect names, emails, phone numbers or addresses.
  • Results come from your orders. Analytics shows views, plays, clicks, orders and sales for each campaign, read live from Shopify.

Winky is in review for the Shopify App Store. It's free to install, and you can see how billing works in the pricing section or read the how it works overview.
