Why a go fishing prize game stands out

Wheels and scratch cards are familiar. A fishing game is a surprise. Fish swimming round a pond catch the eye straight away, and casting a line is a gentle, almost relaxing way to win a discount. It feels more like a toy than a sales tactic.

That calm, cute feel suits stores with a friendly personality: pet supplies, outdoor gear, kids' clothes, homeware and gifts. And because shoppers rarely see a fishing game on a store, it gives yours something to be remembered by.

What the shopper experiences

  1. The pond appears. Your headline sits above a round pond with colourful fish swimming in it.
  2. They cast. One tap or click on the pond casts the line.
  3. A fish bites. A fish comes up carrying the prize on a little tag.
  4. A real code. Winners see their single-use code with a countdown, ready to copy.
  5. Back to shopping. "Shop with my prize" puts the code in the cart, and a reminder bubble brings them back before it expires.

Prize setups for a fishing game

A fishing game comes with a story built in: most catches are small, and now and then someone lands the big one. Lean into it.

  • Small fry and a big catch. Mostly 5% and 10% off, with 15% and 20% off as the rarer catches. The "Catch a fish" template starts close to this.
  • Rarely an empty line. If you include "Nothing (try again)", keep its chance small. The game is gentle, and coming up empty should be unusual.
  • Free shipping in the net. Add a free shipping code you made in Shopify as "My own discount code", and every shopper who catches it gets the same code.

When to use a fishing game

Use the fishing game as an everyday welcome offer when you want something more distinctive than a wheel, or for summer and holiday campaigns. It is a calm choice for an exit intent popup too: one tap, no pressure.

If your shoppers prefer something classic, the spin to win wheel is the familiar choice. If you want more suspense, try the slot machine.

Set up a fishing game popup

  1. Install Winky and switch it on. Winky shows you the one switch to turn on in your theme editor. Your theme's code stays as it is.
  2. Create a campaign from the "Catch a fish" template. Write a headline that names the game and a line that tells shoppers to cast.
  3. Stock the pond. In the Game tab, add your prizes, choose how likely each one is, then set a minimum order and how long codes last.
  4. Choose when it shows. In Show it, pick the timing, pages, devices, who sees it and how often.
  5. Publish. The pond goes live on your store, and Analytics shows the views, plays, clicks, orders and sales it brings in.
TipName the game in your headline. "Go fishing" or "Cast your line" tells shoppers what to do before they read anything else. Our timing and frequency guide helps you choose when the pond appears.
