Slot machine popup for Shopify

A bright little slot machine pops up on your store. The shopper pulls the lever, three reels spin and land, and the prize becomes a real single-use Shopify discount code they can use straight away.

These are the same slots your shoppers play. On your store, the prize is a real code.

Why a slots discount game works

The slot machine is the most theatrical of the seven Winky games. Pulling the lever and watching the reels spin and settle gives the shopper a few seconds of real suspense, and the prize lands with a bit of a cheer.

That energy makes slots a good fit for big moments: a sale weekend, a product drop, a store with a bold, fun brand. Shoppers don't pay or bet anything to play. It is a free game, and the only thing it hands out is a discount you chose.

What the shopper experiences

  1. The machine appears. Your headline sits above a slot machine with three reels and a lever.
  2. They pull the lever. One tap or click and the reels start spinning.
  3. The reels land. The reels slow down, stop, and the prize is shown.
  4. A real code appears. Winners see their single-use code with a countdown, ready to copy.
  5. One click to the cart. "Shop with my prize" applies the code, and a reminder bubble brings them back before it runs out.

Prize setups for slots

Slots feel like a game of luck, so shoppers expect a mix of results. A near miss is part of the fun, as long as most pulls still win something.

  • A "So close!" result. The "Slot machine" template includes a no-prize result called "So close!". It reads kinder than "you lost" and keeps the mood up.
  • One jackpot. Give a single bigger prize, such as 25% off, a small chance and a minimum order, so it feels like a real jackpot without hurting your margins.
  • Everyday wins. Fill most of the chances with 5%, 10% and 15% off, so a typical pull still pays.

When to use a slot machine popup

Use the slot machine when you want energy: a sale weekend, a launch, or a campaign aimed at shoppers arriving from TikTok or Instagram. The reels need a little room, so the middle of the screen is a natural home for it.

For an everyday welcome offer, a calmer game such as the scratch card may sit better, and the spin to win wheel gives a similar sense of chance with a more familiar look. Our page on gamification for Shopify covers matching games to campaigns.

Set up a slot machine popup

  1. Install Winky and switch it on. Winky shows you the one switch to turn on in your theme editor. Your theme's code stays as it is.
  2. Create a campaign from the "Slot machine" template. Write a headline with some swagger, and the button text.
  3. Load the reels. In the Game tab, add your prizes, choose how likely each one is, and set a minimum order and how long codes last.
  4. Choose when it shows. In Show it, pick the timing, pages, devices, who sees it and how often.
  5. Publish. The slots go live on your store, and Analytics shows the views, plays, clicks, orders and sales they bring in.
TipPair slots with a shorter code life, such as 1 hour or 24 hours. The excitement of the pull fades, and a countdown turns it into a reason to check out now. Read popup timing and frequency to decide how often shoppers see it.

Slot machine questions

More answers on the main FAQ.

Is a slot machine popup gambling?

No. Shoppers don't pay or stake anything to play. It's a free game, and the only thing it can hand out is a store discount you chose.

Do the reels decide the prize?

The prize comes from the list and chances you set, and the reels show the result. Chances always add up to 100%, so you decide how often each prize is won.

Can a losing pull say something friendlier than "try again"?

Yes. The Slot machine template's no-prize result is called "So close!", which keeps the mood light.

Can shoppers pull the lever again and again?

No. You choose how often a shopper sees the slots, and a returning winner gets their earlier code back instead of another pull.
