Cart page popup that helps close the sale

A shopper with a full cart is close. A small, well-timed prize can be the nudge that gets them to checkout. Winky shows a quick game on the Cart page, or as they reach to leave, and the winning code goes straight into the cart.

The same scratch card your shoppers see. On your store the prize is a real code.

A quick scratch on the cart page, a code with a countdown, then checkout.

Why the cart page is different

Everywhere else on your store, a popup is introducing an offer to someone who's still browsing. On the cart page, the shopper has already chosen. They're looking at the total, thinking about shipping, or wondering whether to finish now or come back later. A popup here isn't making a first impression; it's helping close.

That also means being careful. Some of the shoppers on your cart page were going to buy anyway, and a prize costs you margin on those orders. The answer isn't to avoid the cart page, it's to keep the prize small, the window short and the minimum order sensible. The settings below do exactly that.

Two ways to reach shoppers at the cart

Show it only on the Cart page

In a campaign's Show it tab, choose Cart page under Pages. Pair it with After 3 seconds or After 10 seconds so the shopper sees their cart before anything appears. This works on every device, including phones.

Exit intent

Choose When they're about to leave and the popup waits until the cursor heads for the tabs or the address bar. On phones and tablets, which have no cursor, it shows once the shopper has browsed for 30 seconds and read halfway down the page. You can run it on every device, or set it to Computers only and let a timed Cart page campaign look after phone shoppers. The exit intent popup page covers it in more detail.

Running both? Give each its own campaign so you can see in Analytics which one brings in more orders.

Guardrails that protect your margin

Short code life

15 minutes or 1 hour suits the cart page: the shopper is already there, so ask them to decide now.

Minimum order

Set a minimum order on a prize so it only applies to baskets worth discounting.

Modest prizes

Small discounts, a "try again" option and low chances for anything big.

Single-use codes

Each winner gets their own code that works once, so it can't be shared.

How often

Once per visit (up to 3 times a week), once a day, once a week or only once ever.

Returning winners

A shopper who already won gets their earlier code back instead of playing again.

A cart page recipe

  1. Create a campaign from the scratch card template. A scratch is quick and works well with a thumb. See the scratch card popup.
  2. Set small prizes. A modest percentage, an amount off with a minimum order, your own free shipping code if you have one, and a "try again" option.
  3. Choose a 1 hour code life. Or 15 minutes if you want the decision made on the spot.
  4. Show it on the Cart page, after 3 seconds, on all devices, once per visit (up to 3 times a week).
  5. Optional: add an exit intent campaign on the Cart page, computers only.
  6. Publish. Winners see their code with a countdown, "Shop with my prize" applies it in one click, and a reminder bubble brings them back before it runs out.
TipFree shipping can suit the cart page, because shipping cost is something shoppers weigh at this stage. Make a free shipping code in Shopify and use "My own discount code" for that prize. More in our prize ideas guide.

How you'll know it's working

Winky's Analytics shows views, plays, clicks, orders and sales for the campaign, read live from your Shopify orders. If shoppers play but don't buy, try a slightly better prize or a lower minimum order. If it's giving away more than you'd like, shorten the code life or lower the chances of the bigger prizes. Cart popup questions

More answers on the main FAQ.

Can I show the popup only on the cart page?

Yes. In Show it, choose Cart page under Pages. You also pick the timing, the devices and how often a shopper sees it.

Does exit intent work on phones?

Yes. On a computer it watches for the cursor heading out through the top of the window. Phones and tablets have no cursor, so there it shows once the shopper has browsed for 30 seconds and read halfway down the page. If you'd prefer a different offer for phone shoppers, set exit intent to computers only and add a timed Cart page campaign.

How do I stop a cart popup giving away too much?

Use a minimum order, a short code life such as 15 minutes or 1 hour, modest prizes with a "try again" option, and a frequency limit. Every code Winky creates is single-use.

What happens when a shopper wins on the cart page?

They see their code with a countdown. "Shop with my prize" applies the code to their cart in one click, and a small reminder bubble brings them back before it expires.
